Sipping Wine - Tips For Sips

Now is the time for sipping your wine. In fact, any time is a good time for sipping wine. Here we go:

  • If you haven’t done so already, swirl the glass and sniff the aromas. Learn more about savoring the aromas and then come back. I’ll wait.
  • Take a moderate size sip and let it cover the tongue. Do not swallow it just yet. Roll it around on your tongue like you‘re chewing it. Let all those nice taste receptors get a sample of the sip. As Anheuser-Busch would say - “These taste buds are for you”.
  • Purse your lips like an “o” and draw a breath over the wine on your tongue. The effect will be dramatic. Be careful not to slurp or dribble. Too embarrassing.
  • Now swallow.
  • What did you taste? What were the flavors? What were the characteristics? What were the flaws, if any? Again, there are no right or wrong answers. Everyone is different in their tastes.
  • Purse your lips again and suck in. You will pick up more dramatic flavors.
  • Wait a minute or two, swirl, and the take a second sip. Now how does it taste? It will likely be better.
  • If you are tasting a lot of wine, cleanse your palate with a cracker or a piece of bread. Drink some water.
  • Avoid strong tasting foods before and during the wine tasting. Your palate may be overwhelmed.
  • Pour another sip or better still, fill the glass.
