The Wine Cellar
A.K.A. The Best Room
In The House

A true luxury in any home is having a wine cellar. Not only do you have the perfect wine storage place but a room to enjoy and show off.

This is the premier way and place to store wine. Isn’t it so cool to have the formal tasting room with racks of wine, a table, chairs, glasses, and cheese plates? Best room in the house, right? All you need is a bed.

But if you don’t have the room or the funds, that’s OK. Any room or
even a closet that is suitable for wine storage will do.

Whatever you use for a cellar, it should be cool, moderately humid, and dark. If not, you may need an air conditioner and/or humidifier. Or a wine cooler may be adequate if your collection is small.

The ideal features of a formal cellar:

  • It has an air conditioner and humidifier.
  • High quality wood for the wine racks to prevent warping from the humidity.
  • Racks that are open on the sides to allow air circulation. Don‘t forget some racks for oversize bottles such as champagne.
  • Only one central light with a dimmer switch so that you can keep the light and heat from the light low. That also adds ambience if you are gathered in there for a tasting.
  • Shelves for large bottles, glasses, accessories, and those cheese plates. Even have spot for a couple of magnums.
  • Leave some room for cases. If you have a cellar, you’re gonna order by the case, right? You can even build shelves for them as well.
  • Same as the racks, you’ll need flooring that is moisture resistant.
  • An insulated door and a vapor barrier.
  • A bed.

Time to start stocking up those wine bottles.
